Kepler-22b: New Planet With Earth-Like Characteristics Discovered In 'Habitable Zone'
NASA announced Monday the discovery of Kepler-22b, the first planet the Kepler spacecraft has discovered in the habitable zone, an area with a distance from a star where temperatures will permit the existence of liquid water.

The discovery of Kepler-22b, which is 600 light-years away from Earth, brings scientists one step closer to finding a planet that could possibly harbor life.

"This is a major milestone on the road to finding Earth's twin," Douglas Hudgins, Kepler program scientist said in a statement. "Kepler's results continue to demonstrate the importance of NASA's science missions, which aim to answer some of the biggest questions about our place in the universe."

Kepler-22b has several Earth-like characteristics: The new planet's temperature is around 72 degrees Fahrenheit and its radius is 2.4 times Earth's. The planet completely orbits its star, which is similar to our sun, every 290 days, just 75 days shy of an Earth year.

Last week, the National Optical Astronomy Observatory announced the discovery of Kepler-21b, a new planet with a radius 1.6 times Earth's. But unlike Kepler-21b, which is only about 3.7 million miles away from its sun and is therefore a scorching 2,960 degrees Fahrenheit, Kepler-22b is about 79 million miles from its sun, coming in at a pleasant 72 degrees.
Scientists use the Kepler spacecraft to discover new planets by analyzing extremely faint dips in light from far-away stars. These "dips" occur each time the planet passes between the Kepler and its sun, therefore obstructing the star's light. In order for a planet to be confirmed, scientists must observe the celestial body orbit its sun three times.

Since Kepler-22B takes 290 days to orbit its sun, it took nearly three Earth years for scientists to confirm that it was a planet. Steve Howell, a scientist at the NASA Ames Research Center who's on the Kepler team, told The Huffington Post that scientists first noticed the a drop in light only days after Kepler was launched in 2009.

"We were just real lucky," Howell told HuffPost. "We saw the first hint of this three days after we started doing science operations right after launch."

According to CNN, the Kepler spacecraft has led to the identification of 2,326 planet candidates since its mission began.

But the most thrilling discoveries are still to come.

"It's tremendously exciting," Howell said, adding that the Kepler spacecraft continues to find planets more and more like Earth. "We're moving out to orbital periods that are nearly and equal to the Earth, and that means very soon we're going to be finding [planets] very near the earth, what we'd call true earth analogs. We'll be there. We'll be there probably within a year, very easily."

With Xbox Live Update, Microsoft Rules Your Television Set

Microsoft is releasing an update to its Xbox Live service tonight which will transform the Xbox into a full-on media center. If you own a Kinect, you’ll be able to access movies, music, and streaming services through voice commands. It’s an update that makes the Xbox 360 a powerful home entertainment device, and pushes the ball further toward the vision of PC-TV integration that Bill Gates has been touting for years.

Tim Carmody says that this time, Microsoft is getting it right and Apple is doing it wrong:

The major mistake made by most gadget reporters and future of technology speculators is drawing too close an analogy between smartphones and smart televisions. We’ve assumed that the next generation of televisions would have a silver-bullet user interface, as gesture-enabled touchscreens were for smartphones. And every time a new user interface comes along, whether it’s Microsoft’s Kinect or Apple’s Siri, we argue that it’s the future of television.

As a consequence, we’ve misunderstood television’s user interface problem. It’s not really about too many cables and too many remotes, as annoying as that can be. It’s really about having the right kind of user interface for the task at hand.

That means pluralism, not minimalism. It means that remote controls and game controllers, with all their ugly buttons, aren’t going away, because they’re actually quite good at what they do.

Instead, they’ll be connected to and complemented by specialized interface devices like cameras, microphones, and touchscreen smartphones and tablets. These will take over some functions, introduce new ones, or even duplicate functionality.

It’s not one ring to rule them all. It’s e pluribus unum.

In other words, it’s the multi-faceted approach Microsoft is taking, pushing lots of devices and content and partnerships with content providers. But, Tim adds, “when I say “Apple is wrong,” I really mean that the conventional wisdom about what Apple will do is wrong.”

Tim is skeptical that a high-cost, high-tech Apple TV will sell at a premium price point, as some analysts are suggesting. Instead, look to the Xbox and the Microsoft approach, ad hoc and late to the game though it may appear (where is the Windows Tablet after all?)

As with all things tech it’s impossible to say. One thing is certain, though: lots of Xbox Live subscribers will get very little sleep tonight.

Bishop Eddie Long's Wife Decides to (Again) File for Divorce

After much-back-and-forth over the issue, Bishop Eddie Long's wife announced that she will indeed go through with her petition to divorce the megachurch pastor.

In a statement issued late Friday, Vanessa Long's attorney says "she has determined that dismissal of her divorce petition is not appropriate at this time," reports Associated Press. Earlier Friday, she said in a statement released through Eddie Long's New Birth Missionary Baptist Church that she loves her husband and planned to withdraw her petition.
It was just yesterday that she filed for divorce from her husband of 20 years, saying, "After a great deal of deliberation and prayer, I have decided to terminate my marriage to Bishop Eddie L. Long. Accordingly, I authorized my attorneys to file for divorce on December 1, 2011."

Bishop Long has been involved in a series of highly publicized sexual abuse scandals over the past two years.

This summer, Eddie Long’s church, New Birth Missionary Baptist, dismissed widely circulated rumors that Vanessa had moved out of the couple’s home shortly after Eddie settled a sexual misconduct case with four men for $15 million.

The settlement stemmed from accusations made against the bishop by Anthony Flagg, Spencer LeGrande, Jamal Parris and Maurice Robinson, who all claimed that Long sexually abused them as young men, offering them gifts and money for their participation. Long denies any wrongdoing.

In October of this year, however, the bishop was involved in yet another scandal when 10 parishioners of his church brought a lawsuit against Long alleging that they lost more than a million dollars after being influenced by Long to invest in businessman Ephren Taylor’s company, City Capital.

Eddie Long’s marriage to Vanessa was his second marriage. The two married in 1990 and have three children together; Edward, Jared and Taylor.

"I don't know," Kim said. "I always wanted what mom and dad had. And at first I was like, 'I want six kids.' Then I went down to four, then I was down to three ... and now I'm like, 'Maybe I won't have any. Maybe I'll just be a good aunt.' "

She added, "That's how I feel. Maybe my fairy tale has a different ending than I dreamed it would. But that's OK."

As you can see, Wisconsin won big and won often this year. Their average margin of victory was 36.4 points. The Badgers have a deadly offense with HB Montee Ball (1,622 yards rushing, 35 TDs) and QB Russell Wilson (72.7 completion %, 2692 yards passing, 28 TDs 3 INT). WR Justin Abbrederis (749 yards receiving 6 TDs) had a breakout year to complement WR Nick Toon (788 yards receiving, 9 TDs) which made it difficult for defenses to key on any one guy. Wisconsin finished 10th in the nation in rushing with 246 YPG, and were 4th in the nation in scoring offense and defense. While Wisconsin won with offense, Michigan State won with defense. MSU finished 3rd in the nation in total defense (vs. Wisconsin's 7th) and 64th in the nation in total offense (vs. Wisconsin's 12th). Even so, MSU's offense put up 30+ points a game while throwing for 244 yards a game (46th in the nation). So Who's Going to Win?
Well Michigan State did slow down Wisconsin's offense the first time these two met, en route to a last second win. MSU had the benefit of playing in front of their home crowd that game which they won't have this weekend. Since their back to back losses, Wisconsin has looked nearly unstoppable (even though it's been against three average teams, and a bad one). I think it'll be another close game, but this time Wisconsin pulls it out in the end.

'South Park' console game to debut next year

Gamers who want to kill Kenny may soon have their chance.

The creators of the "South Park" TV show are working on a new video game that is planned to hit stores in the latter half of next year, game publisher THQ announced on Thursday. It will be available for Sony's PlayStation 3 and for Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Windows computers.

"South Park: The Game" is a role-playing adventure in which players explore the fictional Colorado town and befriend the show's protagonists, Stan, Kyle, Kenny and Cartman. The game is being developed by Obsidian Entertainment, which has designed critically-acclaimed role-playing games in the "Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic" and "Neverwinter Nights" franchises.

With the new game, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, the power duo behind "South Park" and the Broadway hit "The Book of Mormon," should want to erase their last foray into console gaming from people's memories. Acclaim Entertainment's "South Park," a first-person-shooter game released in 1998 for the Nintendo 64, computer and original PlayStation, was panned by critics.

Stone and Parker, along with their regular voice actors, provided the 13-year-old game's soundtrack, but it was criticized for being repetitive. With today's more advanced hardware and direct guidance from the creators, they have a shot at producing a better product. A spokeswoman for Comedy Central and South Park Digital Studios didn't immediately return a request for comment.

"Matt and Trey are arguably two of the most important comedic talents of their generation," THQ executive Danny Bilson said in a statement. "Bringing their vision of South Park to the interactive space is a dream-come-true."

Game Informer magazine, which is published by GameStop, will have more details about "South Park: The Game," including an interview with Stone and Parker, in the issue that hits newsstands this month. Most people go online 'for no particular reason,' survey finds

Americans are going online to pass the time more than they were just a few years ago, according to a new study.

A report from Pew Research Center's Internet & American Life Project found that about 53% of young adults ages 18 to 29 go online on any given day for no particular reason except for a diversion or just for fun. About 81% of people in this demographic said they have done so at least occasionally.

The study -- conducted among 2,260 adults ages 18 and over on landlines and cellphones -- has a margin of error of 3.7%.

But it's not just young web users that turn to the Internet during their down time -- about 58% of all adults or 74% of online adults said they use the Internet this way, up from 45% of adults who said they did so in a Pew survey conducted in 2006. Pew noted that the growth of people using the Internet as a "destination for fun" coincides with the rise of broadband connections, social networking and video.

The trend also suggests that the Web is becoming a competitor to other kinds of other leisure activities.

"These findings are one of our main signs about how deeply Internet use has woven itself into the rhythms of people's lives," lead author Lee Rainie told Mashable.

"When they have some down time, more and more of them are finding the Internet a fun, diverting place to spend their leisure moments. It's not necessarily surprising to see that this is a favorite pastime of young adults. It is a bit surprising to see that the incidence of this use has grown in every age demographic. The Internet is not just the playground of the young."

The study did not ask respondents specifically how they are spending their time online for fun.

U.N. rights chief warns of 'civil war' in Syria

Syria faces a "full-fledged civil war" if the regime's "continual ruthless repression" against peaceful demonstrators and civilians isn't stopped now, the top U.N. human rights official said Friday.

Speaking in Geneva, Switzerland, to a U.N. Rights Council's special session on Syria, U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay noted with concern the reports of "increased armed attacks by the opposition forces, including the so-called Free Syrian Army, against the Syrian military and security apparatus."

"In light of the manifest failure of the Syrian authorities to protect their citizens, the international community needs to take urgent and effective measures to protect the Syrian people," Pillay said.

"The United Nations secretary-general has urged the international community to act as one and take action in a collective and decisive manner to protect the Syrian people against the violations of their human rights and fundamental freedoms. All acts of murder, torture and other forms of violence must be stopped immediately. "

The government crackdown began in mid-March as popular discontent against ruling powers spread across the Arab world. The regime of President Bashar al-Assad has blamed the violence on armed gangs.

Pillay said "more than 4,000 people have reportedly been killed, thousands have been arrested, and more than 14,000 are reported to be in detention as a result of the crackdown." She said many have had to flee their homes, at least 12,400 to neighboring countries and "tens of thousands" internally. Among those killed, she said, are 307 children.

She cited a report issued Monday by an Independent International Commission of Inquiry, established by the Human Rights Council in August to probe human rights violence. It concluded that security and military forces "committed crimes against humanity" against civilians.

"These include acts of killings, torture, rape and other forms of sexual violence, imprisonment, or other forms of severe deprivation of liberty and enforced disappearances throughout the country since March of this year," she said.

Even though it was denied access into Syria, the commission interviewed "223 victims and witnesses, including military and security forces who had defected and testified to the role of Syrian forces in the use of lethal violence against peaceful protests. "

Syrian activists reported security personnel assaults on Friday. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a London-based group, said at least one person was killed and dozens were injured in Homs province when government forces "opened fire randomly" from checkpoints.

CNN is unable to independently confirm events occurring inside Syria because the government does not allow journalists free access to the country.

A whopping 14-minutes long, Lady Gaga's "Marry the Night" video relives what the pop star says was one of her darkest days during her rise to fame.

"It was one of the worst days of my life and it happened quite quickly, but in my mind, when I think back on that period of my life, it all happened very slow," she told E! prior to the world premier of the much-anticipated video Thursday, referring to when she was dropped by her first record label, Island Def Jam.

Directed by the Lady herself, the video starts off with the singer being wheeled along on a gurney by two Calvin Klein-clad nurses, her hair coiffed in a tousled brunette bob.

"When I look back on my life it's not that I don't want to see things exactly as they happened," a robotic sounding Gaga says in a voice over. "It's just that I prefer to remember them in an artistic way."

It's unclear in video what's brought the pop star to her bed-ridden state at what appears to be some sort of clinic or insane asylum, but an older nurse who delivered her from birth tells the "morphine princess" to stay away from intimacy for two weeks.

"I'm gonna be a star," a teary-eyed Gaga tell

Flash forward, and the pop-star is a ballerina appearing alone on stage. The next minute, she is topless and laying in bed, when she gets a phone call.

"But I'm an artist," she says into the receiver, before going absolutely ballistic.

She does what any rejected aspiring pop star would do: smashes mirrors, destroys her apartment and dumps a box of Honey Nut Cheerios over her head before collapsing in a tub. She begins dying her brown locks blond.

A Madonna-esque Gaga steps out in the next scene donning a bedazzled denim ensemble.

"I did what any girl would do," she says in a voice over. "I did it all over again."

Cue music.

As the song finally begins (eight minutes in to the actual video), Gaga tries to sneak into a car through the sunroof while around her, abandoned vehicles burn in the night.

Seconds later, she's in a dance studio, practicing her best pop-star moves along with a host of other aspiring dancers.

The rest of the video is pretty tame by Gaga standards, save for a few flashbacks to her freaking out in a bathtub. She dances on the streets while wearing blue lipstick. She tumbles down some stairs. She lights a few cars on fire. And then it's over.

What did the wacky singer think about the final production?

"It was intensely important to me that it was not too beautiful," she told E! "It was an incredible experience. It was amazing. It was absolutely amazing."

Gaga added that the video's real message is about her marrying her own personal difficulties.

"I am destined to struggle, I am destined to write music about the struggle, and I accept it willingly," she said.

Dallas passing on Donovan McNabb?

IRVING, Texas -- The Dallas Cowboys have no interest in putting in a waiver claim for veteran quarterback Donovan McNabb, who was released by the Minnesota Vikings on Thursday, according to multiple sources.

NFL teams have until 3 p.m. CT to claim McNabb.

There was a thought the Cowboys would have an interest in a backup quarterback because Jon Kitna is nursing a back injury that will force him to miss this third consecutive game this Sunday at Arizona.

Last week the Cowboys put in a claim for Kyle Orton after he was released by Denver. That move was more about preventing the Chicago Bears, a potential playoff opponent for the Cowboys, from getting him. Orton eventually was awarded to Kansas City.

The Bears may have lost quarterback Jay Cutler for the season with a broken hand. His replacement, Caleb Hanie, threw three interceptions in a 25-20 loss to the Raiders Sunday.

The Bears are 24th in the waiver order, meaning they'd have to hope that many teams don't need a veteran quarterback. It looks like Dallas (21st) can be crossed off that list. McNabb has expressed interest in playing for his hometown team, but the Bears have not indicated they plan to put in a claim.

Sage Rosenfels, another veteran quarterback, was also released on Thursday by the Miami Dolphins. But the Cowboys are going to stay with Stephen McGee as the backup to starter Tony Romo until Kitna returns from his injury.

"They've both been very good players in this league," coach Jason Garrett said of McNabb and Rosenfels before Friday's practice at Valley Ranch. "Obviously we've competed against Donovan a lot when he was a quarterback for the Eagles and he's been a great player for a long, long time and the same thing with Sage, in a different role. He's been a veteran player who has played for 10-12 years now and really done a nice job with the role he has been in. But right now, we're going to just stand pat with where we are when we evaluate our quarterback situation."

The Cowboys could sign a quarterback off another teams practice squad roster, such as Rudy Carpenter in Tampa Bay. Carpenter was on the Cowboys 2009 training camp roster and signed to the practice squad before the Buccaneers grabbed him.

If a player leaves the practice squad to join another team's active roster, he must remain eligible to play for three weeks.

Tom Brandstater, who was waived by the St. Louis Rams on Nov. 9 is another potential candidate for the Cowboys. He was in Cowboys camp before getting released on Sept. 3.

As of now, the Cowboys believe Kitna will return at some point in December.

"Donovan has not really been in this system, so that's kind of where that is, and that's all I would say about that," Cowboys owner/general manager Jerry Jones said Friday morning on his weekly radio show on KRLD-FM. "You know what we think of Donovan McNabb. He's really had a great career and a lot of it has been against the Cowboys. I'll never forget the great run he made out here and then the throw he made for a touchdown that was memorable. But bottom line is, we think a lot of Stephen McGee. One of his attributes is his ability to be mobile and move around and throw on the run. That's McNabb's game, too. Where we are right now is, we've got a lot of confidence in Stephen."

The Vikings waived the 13-year veteran quarterback McNabb on Thursday, giving him the opportunity to sign with another team for the stretch run in a parting coach Leslie Frazier described as mutual.

Frazier pushed for the Vikings to trade a sixth-round draft pick this summer to the Washington Redskins in exchange for McNabb. He wanted stability he believed McNabb would bring to the offense after the NFL lockout kept rookie Christian Ponder from practicing with the team or working with his coaches until training camp.

McNabb went 1-5 as a starter, threw for only four touchdowns and completed just five passes of 25-plus yards. Frazier said he didn't regret the trade given the situation the Vikings were in this summer, and said he believes McNabb can still play in the NFL but stopped short of saying he can be an effective starter.

"I'm not certain about that. ... A lot depends on the team he goes to, if he goes to another team," Frazier said.

If McNabb somehow clears waivers in the next 24 hours -- which isn't likely -- he would become free to sign with any team. The team awarded McNabb would assume the approximately $1.6 million remaining on his contract.

The Kennedy assassination: Ben Bradlee recalls his friend

Forty-eight years ago, Ben Bradlee was milling around at lunch hour at a Brentano’s bookshop in Washington, D.C. “The room got quiet. Then people began whispering. You heard ‘Kennedy.’ Then you heard ‘assassination,’ ” Bradlee recalls. Bradlee, then a reporter for Newsweek and a close friend of the young president, ran up 12 stories to his office in the National Press Building to watch the Newsweek ticker spit out the story, with the lead rewritten five or six times. Each rewrite, though, did not change one fact: His friend, John F. Kennedy, had been shot in Dallas.

Bradlee and Kennedy became friends when the two moved in on the same block of N Street in Georgetown. Bradlee was assigned to cover Kennedy’s campaign, but he had a slight advantage over the other reporters: an alleyway between his house and Kennedy’s. As a covey of journalists would wait for the young senator in front of the house, Kennedy would slip through the alley to Bradlee’s home. “I don’t want to disappoint too many people, but ... the number of interesting political, historical conversations we had, you could stick in your ear,” Bradlee recalls. “It wasn’t that many.”

Instead, the two talked about what any other men might: mutual friends, their young families — and, of course, “We talked about girls.”

It is those good times that Bradlee recalls, though having a president as a good friend was no small thing. “God knows it changed my life.”

The two men, pictured at right sailing, remained friends through Kennedy’s presidency. When Kennedy was killed, Newsweek tore up the first half of the magazine, scrambling to fill it with the news. Bradlee’s editor asked him to write a remembrance of the president. Bradlee sat down to type:

“History will best judge John F. Kennedy in calmer days when time has made the tragic and the grotesque at least bearable. And surely history will judge him well — for his wisdom and his compassion and his grace,” he wrote.

Looking back on the death 48 years later, Bradlee pauses and says, “It seems so long ago now.”

Bradlee’s Newsweek essay would go on to be published as a slim book titled “A Special Grace.” He ended it thus: “John Kennedy is dead, and for that we are lesser people in a lesser land.”

The baby's arrival is going to create enough of a logistical headache for the writers to tell stories about the gang hanging out together, but if they have a baby and are living an hour's drive away without traffic(*), then at that point "HIMYM" becomes a show about Ted Mosby, his bro Barney and their mutual ex-girlfriend Robin, with occasional guest appearances by Jason Segel(**) and Alyson Hannigan. But while they'll almost certainly decide to stay in the city, I enjoyed the various jokes about the big house/future chimp sanctuary, the suddenly-small apartment, Marshall's brief attempt to become a Ghostbuster (with no help from the cowardly Ernie Hudson) and Robin's concern about losing her trusted friends to a suburban lifestyle where they'll be lucky to see each other once a month.

(*) And as anyone who's ever tried to travel from New York to its suburbs, or vice versa, can tell you, ain't no such thing as no traffic.

(**) Here's a question for you: with the way the ratings have gone up this year, I could now see the show outliving the current deal that runs through the end of next season. That said, when a show gets that old, there can be budget cuts and/or actors who want to move on and do other things. I've gotten the sense for a while that Jason Segel would probably rather be doing movies full-time and if "The Muppets" is a huge hit, he might have the ability to do so once his contract is up. Can "HIMYM" survive without him, or even with him as a part-timer?

And I also liked Ted and Barney's plan to adopt a baby together as bro-parents. It was silly and wildly unrealistic, but that was the point. They were very drunk and, as Future Ted kept pointing out, in a very dark place due to their recent relationship failures. It played out amusingly without undermining the very serious character moments both Ted and Barney have had of late, and even though I immediately figured that the baby belonged to James and his husband(***), seeing Barney both attempt to parent and enjoy the power of having an adorable baby strapped to his chest was funny.

(***) Played by, I believe, Jai from "Queer Eye for the Straight Guy." Remember when "Queer Eye" was the biggest thing on television for six months?

Then came the final scene, where Robin revealed the real reason for her irrational behavior towards Lily and Marshall - she's pregnant - and I groaned audibly enough that I came close to waking up our own baby. (Lily and Marshall will have to learn not to watch annoying TV shows when their kids are falling asleep.) It was like we got 90 percent of an episode that remembered why we liked this show, and then 10 percent of contrived soap opera nonsense that's going to drag on for the rest of this season: Is the baby Kevin's? Barney's? Is Robin the bride at Barney's wedding, and are they only getting married because of the kid? Will this give the show an excuse to back out of the idea of Barney getting married, because Robin will decide at the last minute she doesn't want a shotgun wedding? If the show hadn't fumbled so many of the relationship arcs for so long, I'd be less pessimistic, but I feel like I've been on this ride a time or 12 already.

Beyond that, I don't know that I'm particularly looking forward to two babies on the show at once. I'm not someone who believes that babies automatically ruin sitcoms - it's more that the babies tend to come when those shows are already running out of gas - and I think there's a lot of good comedy to be had from Marshall and Lily trying to still be part of the gang while battling sleeplessness and the sheer responsibility that comes from being new parents. But if you have 3/5ths of the cast taking care of babies - 4/5ths if Robin winds up with Barney - then things pretty irrevocably change, and at that point we might as well have Ted move to Westchester, Marshall and Lily to Long Island, Robin to Brooklyn, etc. and only have them interact over the phone while they all move through different subplots.

What did everybody else think? Did Robin's news excite or annoy you? Are you ready for multiple kids to be running around Ted's apartment, for MacLaren's to have a stroller traffic jam, for Robin to have a lot of painful conversations with Kevin and/or Barney?

"We will not object to hospital arrest. The condition of where she will be confined does not lie with us or the [Commission on Elections] but with the court. Whether it's hospital arrest or house arrest, it is up to the court. We will not object for as long as she does not leave. If she is in the hospital, she can stay there," she told reporters in Malacañang.

De Lima said the issuance of the arrest warrant was a triumph of justice, noting that the Arroyo couple had tried to leave the country despite a watch list order issued by the DOJ.

She added that the issuance of the arrest order was not unusual based on the judge's own review of the merits of the case.

"Justice has been served," she said.

She added that a Supreme Court-issued temporary restraining order (TRO) on the watchlist order against the Arroyo couple is now moot and academic after the Pasay RTC ordered Arroyo's arrest.

"The issues surrounding the TRO have become moot and academic thus Mrs. Arroyo is compelled to stay in the country and face the electoral sabotage charges," she told reporters.

In a press conference after the arrest warrant was issued, SC spokesman Midas Marquez said the Supreme Court's temporary restraining order (TRO) allowing Mrs. Arroyo to leave still stands.

However, in view of the Pasay RTC's issuance of an arrest warrant against Arroyo for electoral sabotage, Marquez said she is now barred from leaving.

He, however, added that Arroyo's husband, Mike, can still leave the country. Mr. Arroyo was not indicted for electoral sabotage.

Earlier, the Supreme Court voted 8-5 to reject the motion for reconsideration asking the Court to lift the TRO on the government watchlist order.

Ortega-Hernandez has referred to Obama as "the anti- Christ" and "the devil," according to documents filed in the case. He told associates that the federal government was conspiring against him and that Obama was the problem with the government and "needed to be taken care of," Chris Ormerod, a special agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, said in his affidavit.

A task force of federal and local law enforcement agencies had been searching for the gunman who fired shots that hit the White House just after 9 p.m. local time on Nov. 11.

One of the bullets recovered has a diameter, weight and design of the type of bullets found in the Honda, the affidavit alleges.

Evidence Team

Lindsay Godwin, a spokeswoman for the FBI's Washington field office, said an evidence team is processing the scene and looking for anything in the vicinity of where the shots were fired and trying to determine the trajectory.

To convict Ortega-Hernandez, the government will have to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that he "specifically intended" to kill the president and took a "substantial step" to carry out that intention, said Bernie Grimm, a criminal defense lawyer at Cozen O'Connor in Washington. Grimm isn't involved in the case.

Prosecutors could have a hard time proving intent, said John Zwerling, a criminal-defense attorney with Zwerling, Leibig & Moseley PC in Alexandria, Virginia, who also isn't involved in the case.

"I don't know how they can prove he was trying to kill someone if he can't see them, didn't necessarily even know if the person was in the building or by the window, or that the window was the kind of window you could shoot through," Zwerling said.

Attempted Murder

Francisco Martin Duran was convicted of the attempted murder of President Bill Clinton after firing at least 29 shots through a fence on the north grounds of the White House in October 1994, according to a Treasury Department report on White House security. He was sentenced to 40 years in prison.

Eleven rounds hit the White House facade and one bullet penetrated a window of the press briefing room. Clinton was in the residence watching television when the shooting took place, according to the report.

Duran, who was 26-years-old at the time of the shooting, told several people he intended to kill the president prior to leaving Colorado and investigators found a handwritten note saying "Kill the Pres!" in an atlas in his truck, according to the report.

Pythagoras in the sixth century B.C. was one of the originators of the idea. Aristotle in the fourth century B.C. provided the physical evidence, such as the shadow of the Earth on the moon and the curvature of the Earth known by all sailors approaching land. And by the third century B.C., Eratosthenes determined our planet's shape and circumference using basic geometry. In the second century, Claudius Ptolemy wrote the "Almagest," the mathematical and astronomical treatise on planetary shapes and motions, describing the spherical Earth. This text was well known throughout educated Europe in Columbus' time.

Columbus, a self-taught man, greatly underestimated Earth's circumference. He also thought Europe was wider than it actually was and that Japan was farther from the coast of China than it really was. For these reasons, he figured he could reach Asia by going west, a concept that most of educated Europe at the time thought was daft — not because the earth was flat, but because Columbus' math was so wrong. Columbus, in effect, got lucky by bumping into land that, of course, wasn't Asia.

The Columbus flat-earth myth perhaps originated with Washington Irving's 1828 biography of Columbus; there's no mention of this before that. His crew wasn't nervous about falling off the earth.

The One Who discover America

let's ignore the fact that millions of humans already inhabited this land later to be called the Americas, having discovered it millennia before. And let's ignore that whole Leif Ericson voyage to Greenland and modern-day Canada around the year 1000. If Columbus discovered America, he himself didn't know. Until his death he claimed to have landed in Asia, even though most navigators knew he didn't.

What Columbus came across was the archipelago of the Bahamas and then the island later named Hispaniola, now split into Haiti and the Dominican Republic. On his subsequent voyages he went farther south, to Central and South America. He never got close to what is now called the United States.

So why does the United States celebrate the guy who thought he found a nifty new route to Asia and the lands described by Marco Polo? This is because the early United States was fighting with England, not Spain. John Cabot (a.k.a. Giovanni Cabot, another Italian) "discovered" Newfoundland in England's name around 1497 and paved the way for England's colonization of most of North America. So the American colonialists instead turned to Columbus as their hero, not England's Cabot. Hence we have the capital, Washington, D.C. — that's District of Columbia, not District of Cabot.

Columbus introduced syphilis to Europe.

This is hotly debated. Syphilis was present in pre-Columbus America. Yet syphilis probably existed for millennia in Europe as well, but simply wasn't well understood. The ancient Greeks describe lesions rather similar to that from syphilis. Perhaps by coincidence, an outbreak of syphilis occurred in Naples in 1494 during a French invasion, just two years after Columbus' return. This sealed the connection.

But aside from descriptions of syphilis-like lesions by Hippocrates, many researchers believe that there was a syphilis outbreak in, of all places, a 13th-century Augustinian friary in the English port of Kingston upon Hull. This coastal city saw a continual influx of sailors from distant lands, and you know what sailors can do. Carbon dating and DNA analysis of bones from the friary support the theory of syphilis being a worldwide disease before Columbus' voyages.

Columbus died unknown in poverty.

Columbus wasn't a rich man when he died in Spain at age 54 in 1506. But he wasn't impoverished. He was living comfortably, economically speaking, in an apartment in Valladolid, Crown of Castile, in present-day Spain, albeit in pain from severe arthritis. Columbus had been arrested years prior on accusations of tyranny and brutality toward native peoples of the Americas. But he was released by King Ferdinand after six weeks in prison. He was subsequently denied most of the profits of his discoveries promised to him by Ferdinand and Queen Isabella.

After his death, though, his family sued the royal crown, a famous lawsuit known as the Pleitos colombinos, or Columbian lawsuits, lasting nearly 20 years. Columbus' heirs ultimately secured significant amounts of property and other riches from the crown. Also, most European navigators understood by the end of the 15th century, before his death, that Columbus had discovered islands and a large land mass unknown to them.

Columbus did nothing significant.

With all this talk of a hapless Columbus accidentally "discovering" the New World, as well as the subsequent genocide of native cultures, it is easy to understand the current backlash against Columbus and the national holiday called Columbus Day, celebrated throughout North and South America. This isn't entirely fair.

While Columbus was wrong about most things, he did help establish knowledge about trade winds, namely the lower-latitude easterlies that blow toward the Caribbean and the higher-latitude westerlies that can blow a ship back to Western Europe. Also, while Columbus wasn't the first European to reach the Western Hemisphere, he was the first European to stay. His voyages directly initiated a permanent presence of Europeans in both North and South America.

News of the success of his first voyage spread like wildfire through Europe, setting the stage for an era of European conquest. One can argue whether the conquest was good or bad for humanity: that is, the spread of Christianity, rise of modernism, exploitation and annihilation of native cultures, and so on. But it is difficult to deny Columbus' direct role in quickly and radically changing the world.

Do you know who is Roger Williams? He is virtuoso pianist who topped the Billboard pop chart in the 1950s and played for nine U.S. presidents during a long career. Williams' 1955 hit "Autumn Leaves" is the only piano instrumental to reach No. 1 on the Billboard pop charts and remains the best-selling piano record of all time.

Nicknamed the "pianist to the presidents," Williams played for every commander in chief from Harry Truman to George W. Bush. He was a close friend to several.

Williams was close friends with Jimmy Carter, with whom he shared a birthday. When the two men turned 80, Mr. Williams played at the Jimmy Carter Library.

As a teenager, Williams had already scored his own 15-minute radio show on KRNT, broadcast live from a Des Moines, Iowa (his hometown), department store.

Later he hosted a program on WHO, where he met a young sports announcer named Ronald "Dutch" Reagan. The two became friends - for over six decades.

Williams moved to New York to study jazz at the Juilliard School of Music. He is credited with at least 22 hit singles from 37 commercially successful albums.

California Dream Act Signed By Jerry Brown: Second Bill Passes

On Saturday, Governor Jerry Brown signed AB 131, the second bill of the two-part California Dream Act, allowing undocumented immigrant students to apply for state-funded financial aid for college.

In July, Brown signed AB 130, making funding from private sources available to undocumented students. With Saturday's signing of AB 131, the California Dream Act passed in its entirety, granting undocumented students access to public and private funding for college.

"Going to college is a dream that promises intellectual excitement and creative thinking," said Brown in a press release. "The Dream Act benefits us all by giving top students a chance to improve their lives and the lives of all of us."

According to the California Department of Finance, about 2,500 students will qualify for Cal Grants as a result of the bill, at a cost of $14.5 million. This amount will make up 1 percent of the annual $1.4 billion budget of the Cal Grant program.

In the 21st century, egalitarianism reigns -- or does it? Why, if a husband can have a mistress, can his wife not have a mister? Not just a "piece on the side," certainly not a gigolo, but a man with whom she shares a long-term, extramarital romantic and sexual relationship -- a mister, the male equivalent to husband's mistress. (Except that, in these modern times, she should not have to support him.)

This is by no means a new notion. In 1778, Lady Julia Stanley -- the protagonist of Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire's novel "The Sylph" -- muses that her husband has had a mistress since their wedding day and asks plaintively, "What law excludes a woman from doing the same?"

The simple answer was the law of the double standard that tolerated adultery in husbands but condemned it in wives -- the law of England, indeed, the law of most lands. In an era of marriages contracted as either commercial or family alliances, when (in Lady Julia's words) "the heart [was] not consulted," this law was particularly onerous.

Let's look at how patrician society in England and Italy attempted to assuage the wifely dissatisfaction and unhappiness that marked so many unloving marriages. Julia's creator, Georgiana, knew the rules. The wife must produce an heir and until then, remain faithful. Afterward, as long as she was discreet, she could become another privileged man's lover (no mating with the coachman or gardener!) but without conceiving his child. Her husband, who protected and provided for her, could only be clandestinely cuckolded.

Georgiana played by these rules. Whenever she seemed likely to stray, her controlling mother reined her in. It didn't matter that her husband's new mistress, Bess Foster, was her closest friend. Only after Georgiana had produced an heir could she decently look outside her marriage for the personal fulfillment so egregiously lacking inside it.

That happy day came when Georgiana delivered William Hartington "Hart" Spencer, her third child and first son, the longed-for heir who (she rejoiced) freed her from marital bondage. She began a passionate love affair with the much younger politician, Charles Grey. But Grey was not her mister. Rather, she had become his mistress.

Then Georgiana broke a cardinal rule -- she became pregnant by Grey -- and her furious husband forced her to choose. If she did not break off with Grey, she would never again see her children. Georgiana's capitulation was immediate. Terrified and contrite, she renounced mistressdom and resumed her life as an unloved, cuckolded wife.

In Italy, the talented and beautiful Teresa Guiccioli, teenage wife of the very wealthy sixty-year-old Count Alessandro Guiccioli, had a similarly difficult marriage. But before she provided the Count with an heir, Teresa fell profoundly in love with the charismatic and equally smitten expatriate English poet George Gordon, Lord Byron.

They had sex almost immediately. Teresa's maid helped cover their tracks. A priest acted as their go-between. Their affair invoked the unreality of Italian opera -- assignations in gliding gondolas and charming, out-of-the-way villas, and long, long hours in bed. Soon, Byron proposed that they run away together.

Teresa was shocked. Did Byron not know that in Italy, a wife could have both a husband and a cavalier servente, an eternally faithful, devoted (though chaste) lover? Teresa could have Byron and Guiccioli together -- as long as they pretended that she and Byron were not sexual partners.

The institution of cavalier servente did not challenge the husband's dominance in marriage. As in England, a wife was supposed to produce her husband's heir. Afterward, she was free to cavort with an amico -- a "friend" or soulmate who would accompany her to plays, churches and elsewhere. But unlike his English counterpart, the amico was forbidden to have sex with her.

The supposedly sex-starved amico also had to swear eternal fidelity to his mistress and promise never to marry or to leave Italy. (Priests were a favorite choice, for their vows of celibacy precluded marriage with anyone.) This arrangement also protected the husband; should he die, his merry widow could never marry her amico. Murder, or suspicious accidents aka "Divorce, Italian Style" could not change the amico's status. A husband's demise was no reason -- or excuse -- for his wife's platonic relationship to become a sexual one.

The wife's conduct was carefully regulated. She could see her amico in her home but not in his. She could invite him to theatrical productions in her family's box but not join him in his. She was bound forever to her husband, and she and her amico had to display admiration and affection for him, and never shame or dishonor him or his family's name or, for that matter, her father's.

So how did cavalier servente work for Teresa? First, Guiccioli "borrowed" a large sum of money from Byron, then invited him to move into their palace where eighteen servants spied on the lovers and made sexual trysts nearly impossible. Guiccioli also noisily exercised his husbandly right to sex with Teresa, making Byron intensely jealous.

As the affair deteriorated, Byron complained that a man should not be hobbled to a woman, and that his "existence [as a cavalier servente] is to be condemned." Weary of the conflict and rancor, and no longer "furiously in love," Byron left Italy -- and Teresa -- forever. Teresa grieved. In breaking the rules that forbid a cavalier servente from abandoning his mistress, Byron had broken her heart and humiliated her. Soon after, her unhappy marriage failed.

Georgiana and Teresa were exceptional women in unexceptional marriages, and their experiences were typical of those of legions of dissatisfied and unhappy wives who struggled for a modicum of relief from the constraints of their arranged marriages. The English assumed sex would occur but penalized its consequences; the Italians permitted socializing and companionship couched in terms of medieval courtly love, but forbid sex. Both imposed strict standards of decorum that upheld husbandly authority. Both systems were, in other words, based on hypocritical premises and for most women, could only work when practiced in the breach.

Our egalitarian society has yet to improve on these 18th century pioneering models by devising a way to respond to today's realities. More than two centuries later the challenge still resonates: If a husband can have a mistress, why can't his wife have a mister?

Episode Summary: Turns out Sophia is a pushover — Vince busts into penthouse three and reveals to Turtle, Drama and Billy that he’s just had a 24 hour date with and is about to get married. In Paris! Tonight! Fortunately he just made a bazillion dollars from Avión and can fly the boys over.

But will Ari attend the wedding? First he’s got to contend with a potential divorce, and a bunch of NFL managers whom he asked to visit the office to motivate his staff. We never get to see said motivation as Mrs. Ari drops by the office. She thinks it’s time to tell the kids about their divorce. But first, one last therapy session together.

Eric’s decided that he’s going to follow Sloan to New York, even though she’s not speaking to him. Vince doesn’t think he should throw everything away — especially not tonight. There’s that wedding in Paris after all! Vince tries to speed up the E-Sloan reconciliation by talking to her. E is adamant that Vince leave her alone.

Instead, Turtle and Drama head over to talk to Sloan. They invite her to the wedding, it’s important that she attend as she’s carrying “their” baby. The collective baby. Run Sloan, run! Sloan thinks it’s all a plot to get her and E on a plane together so they can talk it out. (Is she in the right trimester to travel?) Before Sloan answers, she wants to know if Eric slept with Melinda. Johnny swears on his career that he didn’t. Johnny doesn’t have much to lose anyway.

In therapy, Ari and Mrs. Ari role play telling the kids. Ari plays himself, Mrs. Ari is supposed to be playing their daughter, but isn’t really feeling the role. She reveals that she and Bobby Flay broke up due to lingering feelings for her husband. Ari reveals he’s broken up with Dana, for the very same reason. Still, she wants that damn divorce!

Vince goes ring shopping with Billy, and Rachel Zoe happens to drop by to consult on said ring. What a coincidence! She suggests a $1-million-plus ring. As you do. Vince takes a call from Terrence, and tries to convince Sloan’s dad to be kind to E, but that doesn’t go so well as, er, Terrence didn’t know he was going to become a grandpa. The boys reconvene at a restaurant, and Terrence “randomly” rings up E. Turns out he’s coming for E, possibly (probably?) with a gun. Oops.

Ari calls up his daughter and asks if he’s a bad dad. She reveals that she complained to Mrs. Ari about how her dad “never listens,” meaning he never listened to a CD that she’d given to him — a recording from some opera singers, singers she thinks he should sign. Lloyd’s been listening to it all this time, and finally plays it for Ari, who finds God or reality or something. He walks out of the office, telling Babs she can have it all, he just wants his family. I don’t buy for one second that Ari walks away from it all.

Vince arrives at Sloan’s house to apologize. Vince explains that he wants to marry Sophia because he finally felt what E felt for Sloane. Vince gives her a lecture, tells her that Eric is her family now, even if Terrence isn’t happy about it, and you know, take him back already.

A rejuvenated Ari arrives at home and tells Mrs. Ari that they should go to Florence for a year — oh, and those opera singers happen to have followed him to the house. He can’t go on without her, she relents. They’ll live happily ever after! Lloyd shows up: How dare Ari quit without telling him! Oh Lloyd, Ari tells him, you’ll be fine. And these opera singers are your newest clients!

The Biggest crocodile in the Whole World found in the Philippines in Bunawan township, Agusan del Sur Province. Giant crocodile captured alive in Philippines. Villagers and veteran hunters have captured a one-ton saltwater crocodile which they plan to make the star of a planned ecotourism park in a southern Philippine town, an official said Monday.

Mayor Edwin Cox Elorde said dozens of villagers and experts ensnared the 21-foot (6.4-meter) male crocodile along a creek in Bunawan township in Agusan del Sur province after a three-week hunt. It could be one of the largest crocodiles to be captured alive in recent years, he said, quoting local crocodile experts.

Elorde said the crocodile killed a water buffalo in an attack witnessed by villagers last month and was also suspected of having attacked a fisherman who went missing in July.

He said he sought the help of experts at a crocodile farm in western Palawan province.

"We were nervous but it's our duty to deal with a threat to the villagers," Elorde told The Associated Press by telephone. "When I finally stood before it, I couldn't believe my eyes."

After initial sightings at a creek, the hunters set four traps, which the crocodile destroyed. They then used sturdier traps using steel cables, one of which finally caught the enormous reptile late Saturday, he said.

About 100 people had to pull the crocodile, which weighs about 2,370 pounds (1,075 kilograms), from the creek to a clearing where a crane lifted it into a truck, he said.

The crocodile was placed in a fenced cage in an area where the town plans to build an ecotourism park for species found in a vast marshland in Agusan, an impoverished region about 515 miles (830 kilometers) southeast of Manila, Elorde said.

"It will be the biggest star of the park," Elorde said, adding that villagers were happy that they would be able to turn the dangerous crocodile "from a threat into an asset."

Despite the catch, villagers remain wary because several crocodiles still roam the outskirts of the farming town of about 37,000 people.

They have been told to avoid venturing into marshy areas alone at night, Elorde said.

And what’s a huge mega fight without extensive coverage to coincide with this event?

Seemingly as an every fight ritual since it’s inception in 2007 with the Mayweather vs. De La Hoya blockbuster, HBO will be providing viewers with an in depth look at each fighter leading up to the fight with a four part reality show entitled “24/7 Mayweather-Ortiz”.

For those who don’t know, the show “24/7” is an Emmy award winning sports documentary/reality show from HBO, revolving around sportsmen or sports organizations leading up to a particular major sporting event.

In this case, it is the highly publicized bout between Mayweather and Ortiz.

The show “24/7” is a gateway entrance into each fighter’s world of training, family life, and social life.

Mayweather along with Hall of Fame fighter Oscar De La Hoya participated in the inaugural season of “24/7” and since its inception, several spin-offs have manifested to accompany other significant fights and sporting events in recent years.

Some of these series included Joe Calzaghe vs. Roy Jones Jr., Miguel Cotto vs. Manny Pacquiao, etc.

No disrespect to the other aforementioned fighters and other participants in the show, but quite honestly the 24/7 series is boring without the co-creator Mayweather.

Surrounded by his team of people, the usual suspects like head trainer Roger Mayweather, financial adviser Leonard Ellerbe, assistant trainer Rafael Garcia, business partner and friend 50 Cent.

Also making appearance with the Mayweather team is his fiancée Shantel Jackson.

Granted a vast majority of the content with Mayweather include constant conversations of fame, jealousy, wealth, cars, and other luxurious delicacies enjoyed by the money maker himself.

But in the middle of the self grandeurising, lies a mix of other elements as well.

Compelling, heated arguments and bickering amongst family members, the berating of opponents, a daily dose of ignorance here and there, all boils into interesting must see television.

Even as an avid viewer of this program, there is still the same shock value I initially witnessed when first watching this series.

The heated exchange between Mayweather Jr. and his father Mayweather Sr. was certainly a spectacle to behold and certainly difficult for me to even digest.

Exercising deeply rooted family issues on television is definitely not the easiest to witness but it certainly is ratings gold.

It’s like that analogy with car wrecks. With a car accident, you know it’s bad, but you can’t help but watch.

And of course there is also Victor Ortiz. This is the outlet to familiarize the public with his story.

The first episode introduced Ortiz, his younger brother Temo, and his trainer Danny Garcia. We are able to get a peek at what makes Ortiz the man and fighter he is today, and even his doubters can have an appreciation of how he has triumphed over many obstacles in his life.

Ortiz has a heart warming story, with he and his brother being abandoned by their parents, fighting to survive and basically finding their road to survival through the sport of boxing.

The first episode definitely did a job of defining themes for the series.

The constant theme of series will have Mayweather staring as the villain most people love to hate.

Arrogant, too flashy, an egomaniac, etc.

The other theme is the overall feel good story of the under dog Ortiz. He will be portrayed as an humble, hungry, nice, young champion, and there will probably be many people who will root for him because it.

I’m certain Mayweather doesn’t really care. At the end of the day, he is doing his job promoting the fight hate him or love him.

He is an entertainer and drama sells tickets.

It’s Floyd being Floyd, he is living up to his persona; “Pretty Boy Floyd” aka “Money Mayweather“.

This looks to be an like interesting series to say the least.

Brandon Meriweather To The Chicago Bears

The New England Patriots released two-time Pro Bowl safety Brandon Meriweather at the NFL roster cut down deadline yesterday causing him to become a free agent. The move seemed like a surprise to those on the outside considering Meriweather's age (27) and skill (two consecutive Pro Bowls) but those in New England aren't totally surprised by it.

Since Meriweather is a good player, and he played for the Patriots, many concluded that the Kansas City Chiefs would be interested in him.

Maybe they were, maybe they weren't, but he won't be signing with the Chiefs. The Chicago Bears have announced they locked Meriweather down with a one-year contract.

I expected him to sign a one-year deal. He's a young player so his best move would be to sign a one-year deal, play well in that one year and hope to hit the open market next March as the top safety available.

The Chiefs could have used him to create good depth but he would be a role player (i.e. not paid like a starter) so I'm not sure KC was the best fit.

Ruth Geer: Age is just a number to 84-year-old daredevil

PLANT CITY --Ruth Geer jumped out of a plane on her 80th birthday.

When she recently turned 84, she wasn't sure how to celebrate.

She settled on trying a zip-line tour.

Geer visited Florida EcoSafaris in St. Cloud where she and other riders traveled through a 55-foot forest canopy – and above a huge gator – harnessed to a pulley on a cable strung between towers. Riders zip along because the cable is at an incline.

The retired nurse said she wasn't scared. The adventure fits in with the active lifestyle she enjoys with her 89-year-old husband Robert that includes regular exercise at the YMCA, bowling, golfing and Bible study.

"There is so much to embrace in life. I don't want to miss one joyous moment so I make plans to make the four- or five-year marks since I turned 80 to be memorable," she said.

"Of course, I never expected to live long enough to do the things I said I would do when I reached these milestones. I'm as surprised as anybody but I said I'd do it, so I just do it."

Her son Bobby Madison said his mom is always ready for a challenge.

"I learn more about my mother every year. She's a real daredevil. I'd never do anything like that."

Madison's friend, Tara Gower, tried out the zip-line and pondered what Geer might do for an encore.

"Bobby I wonder what death-defying things your mother is planning for her next birthday?" Gower said.

"Couldn't we just all take a nice cruise somewhere like normal people?"

Notre Dame football stadium cleared due to lightning

(Reuters) - Notre Dame's football stadium was cleared in South Bend, Indiana on Saturday at halftime of the season opening game against South Florida after several lightning strikes in the area, a university spokesman said.

"Right now we are in an indefinite weather delay," Notre Dame spokesman Dennis Brown said. "We evacuated the stadium at about 5:12 p.m., right at halftime."

Brown said there were a number of lightning strikes in the area and the "vast majority of the stadium was evacuated" though there were a few people remaining in the stands.

The university also was expecting high winds as a storm front passes through the area, Brown said.

"It has been cloud-to-ground lightning strikes within a 10-mile radius which is the radius the NCAA uses," Brown said. "We actually started our announcements even before then to err on the side of caution."

South Bend Police Captain Phil Trent, who was working traffic at the game, said a "pretty significant" number of people were leaving the stadium, but he suspected some would stick around until the bitter end.

"It's still looking bad out here, so we'll see what happens," Trent said. "Not northern Indiana football weather at all."

South Florida was leading Notre Dame 16-0 at halftime and no decision had been made about when the game would resume. The stadium has a capacity of nearly 81,000.

Brown said it was to the best of their recollection the first time Notre Dame Stadium had been evacuated in at least 60 years.

Most of the students initially stayed put in the stands despite the evacuation order, getting up only when ushers kicked them out. Fans waited out the storm in the stadium concourse and several other nearby university buildings.

With his team losing, 19-year-old Notre Dame sophomore Joey Labetti looked for the silver lining in the delay.

"I honestly hope that this is divine intervention," Labetti said.

Oscar De La Hoya fights this foe one day at a time

After finally coming to terms about his alcoholism, the former boxing world champion and now a promoter checks into a rehab center and tries to beat as formidable an opponent as he faced in the ring.

Legendary boxer Oscar De La Hoya has a message for a sports world that idolized and doted on him.

"Hi. I'm Oscar De La Hoya and I'm an alcoholic."

So, we have tarnish on the Golden Boy. The fighter who carried the sport for nearly a decade, who proved you didn't have to be a heavyweight to appeal to the masses, who generated nearly $700 million in pay-per-view revenue before retiring at 36 in 2009, is telling all.

We never thought he was a choir boy. There have been stories of boozing and womanizing along the way. But he was a boxer. You don't expect St. Peter.

Still, this week's revelation deserves the attention of the sports world because it is a world where the toughest truths are seldom uttered.

The truth, and nothing but the truth, begins its unraveling on the first tee of the Ojai Valley Inn golf course. Pose for a photo, the starter says. OK now, everybody say "whiskey."

De La Hoya says, "Water."

The tone is set. It will be 18 holes and 6,292 yards of introspection. The horrible details, the pain, anger and depth of despair, bring insignificance to the shanks and three-putts.

"I haven't been truly sober since I was 8," De La Hoya says, recalling how he was a waiter at family functions, brought beer to the men and was encouraged to take a sip.

"A sip sounds harmless," he says. "But after about 20, you are drunk.

"I remember the first time, when I passed out. My mother whacked me pretty good, but the men seemed fine with it."

Until he entered the Promises rehab center in Malibu three months ago, De La Hoya had been fighting the influence of alcohol for 30 years. That meant through 10 world titles in six weight divisions, through a 39-6 pro record, even through a transition to corporate executive of the promotion company he founded and for which he is the president. Until three months ago, the man behind the big oak desk in the downtown offices of Golden Boy Promotions was fooling us all and hating himself for it.

"It's a monster so big I cannot describe it," he says.

Then he tries.

"It was bad. I'm surprised it hasn't killed me," he says. "Some people can drink. I can't. In the last few years, it always ended up the same way. I'd black out.

"My best friend, Eric [Gomez, matchmaker and vice president of Golden Boy], would be with me, have a couple of beers and stop. I'd always be the one saying we should have a few more. But if I said I was going to have two, it would always turn out to be 10. Ten wasn't enough. A thousand wasn't enough."

Rock bottom occurred three months ago, after a party in Los Angeles to celebrate a business arrangement with a Golden Boy sponsor. The sponsor was a brand of tequila.

"I had a driver, thank God," De La Hoya says. "I remember waking up and looking around and I was in the back seat of the car, we were on the street near my downtown office and I had a cocktail glass in my hand. I felt awful, the whole scene was awful. I had been there too many times before. I called my wife, she told me to just come home. I threw the glass out the window and it smashed on the street."

He was sent to the other room to sleep, as usual, and when he awoke, he knew there was no more messing with the monster.

For hundreds of thousands of people, the dream of making an Internet fortune works like this: Earn pennies at a time in exchange for allowing Google Inc. or Yahoo Inc. to place advertisements on a personal or small-business Web page.

Take Andrew Leyden, former House Commerce Committee counsel and founder of a dot-com venture that failed, who started PodcastDirectory.com, a search engine for podcasts. As the site's popularity rose from a hundred hits a month in 2004 to nearly a million now, Leyden started making the equivalent of an entry-level government worker's salary -- $30,000 to $40,000 a year -- simply because people clicked on ads. That allowed him to work at home in Chesapeake Beach, Md., trying to make more money by attracting still more traffic to his site.

"I went from literally 26 cents a week or something like that to several dollars an hour," he said, by using Google's AdSense software, which solicits bids from marketers who, in turn, pay to run ads on his site. "I get paid while mowing the lawn. I get paid while cleaning the garage. I get paid driving my wife to her office, buying groceries, seeing a movie, playing video games, or just surfing the Internet. That's really the nice thing about AdSense: No matter what I'm doing, people keep clicking and I keep getting paid."

A decade ago, the Internet dream was to score through venture-capital financing and by raising cash in public stock offerings. Now, people with creative ideas can get rich relatively quickly by permitting advertisers to piggyback on any Web site that attracts a lot of viewers. Technology can direct ads to more and more specific audiences, rewarding entrepreneurship on the smallest scale -- even Web pages filled with obscure and homemade content.

"We have a segment of customers called hopeful hobbyists" who have Web sites devoted to anything they might care about, from crochet to sailing, and who hope to eventually make enough money to quit their day jobs, said Willan Johnson, vice president of Yahoo Publisher Network, which launched a test version of its software last year.

David Miles Jr. and Kato Leonard, two 20-year-olds in Louisville, say they collect $100,000 a month from their year-old site, Freeweblayouts.net, which gives away designs that people can use on MySpace social-networking pages. One couple blogged about their home reconstruction and made money to help pay the mortgage on their new house. Jock Friedly's business, Storming Media LLC, allows users to download public documents; he used the money his Web site made on ads for new online ventures.

Companies like Google, in turn, also find profit in such sites. In the second quarter, Google got $997 million, or 41 percent of its revenue, through the network of Web sites that host ads through the AdSense system. Its software, like Yahoo's, prices ads based on popularity. When users click the ads, the software keeps detailed records, including the number of page views and the amount of commission the site's host earns from the ad -- all of which Web site owners can keep track of by logging on to their accounts. Every month, Google pays publishers by check or direct deposit.

Ad publishers must be approved through Google, to ensure that the ads don't subsidize pornography or gambling, or contain material that is racist, violent or related to illegal drugs. Among other things, Google says it watches to make sure people don't inflate their revenues by clicking on their own ads -- a practice known as "click fraud" that has plagued online marketing.

The popularity of making money this way also has led to creation of "made-for-AdSense" Web pages that contain little content and lots of ads, which critics say clutter the Internet and divert online searches.

The system depends on the cooperation of advertisers, who have to see that their money is well spent, said Jennifer Slegg, an online publisher who is a consultant on AdSense and Yahoo Publisher Network, and who makes roughly half her income from AdSense ads.

"I hear tons of stories about people who were facing bankruptcy but now are able to pay off their houses in full," she said.

The biggest moneymakers tend to be people who started sites to document their passions. Matther Daimler, 28, developed an obsession with finding the most comfortable seats on the long airline flights he took for business. He would look at a better-situated traveler and think: "He has more legroom. I want that seat next time."

In 2001, he took to cataloguing on his SeatGuru site all the seats on his usual United Airlines flight, rating them for best legroom, the most recline, access to video and audio entertainment, and proximity to different types of laptop power sources. Soon, at the request of people who read his site, he started taking information on other flights. He now keeps track of seats on 34 airlines.

Daimler and his wife now work full time on SeatGuru, which gets 700,000 visitors a month. About half of the site's revenue comes through AdSense -- $10,000 to $20,000 a month -- and the rest comes from ad deals that Daimler makes with companies directly.

Tracking clicks and the money they earn itself has become a passion for Leyden. "In the middle of the night I'll wonder how much I made," he said, so he'll check his page's status every 15 minutes.

The money that comes in acts like microfinancing for many sites, said Kim Malone, director of AdSense. "We're enabling creativity, 5 cents at a time."

Friedly, for example, started his company in Washington in 2001 to make it easier for contractors, scientists and researchers to find, download and purchase public documents. He reluctantly signed up to put ads on the site. "I was skeptical because when you sell something, you want to focus on the product, not refer people to other Web sites," he said.

But with more than 10,000 hits a day, the income started adding up. "I was surprised by how much we made. It was an excellent supplement to the business, because we didn't have to do a lot."

Friedly has since started PatentStorm LLC, a site where businesses can search patent records, without outside investment. "In essence, Google has turned into a venture capital or an angel investor in my business."

But if Google giveth, it also taketh away, Friedly said. As people put up more sites that compete with his for traffic, the number of hits on his main site has declined.

Casey Anthony Is Acquitted; the Media Trial Is Just Beginning

You could have watched the Casey Anthony verdict on another channel besides HLN,* but that would have been like watching election returns on ESPN.

Other networks covered the trial, some more fervently than others — notably TruTV, formerly known as Court TV. But it was HLN that threw itself into the trial with lust and bloodlust, that captured (and inflamed) the emotional tone of the child-murder case, scoring mammoth ratings in the process.

And when the Florida jury returned a not-guilty verdict (on the major charges) in the murder of 2-year-old Caylee Anthony, it was HLN, with its head anchor/inquisitor Nancy Grace, that voiced its shock passionately.

Under Grace, the former prosecutor with a righteous voice and burning glare, HLN's coverage had a clear subtext: Casey Anthony was guilty, and retribution was due. (Maybe not even subtext: the channel's coverage was branded "JUSTICE FOR CAYLEE," with a picture of the murdered girl flashing constantly onscreen.) Grace took over coverage as the verdict became due at 2:15 p.m. E.T. and was almost taunting toward the defendant, whom she had dubbed Tot Mom. ("Tot Mom is about to chew her fingers off," Grace said, observing edgy Anthony's nail biting.)

When the not-guilty verdict came in, there was a brief, chilling silence, punctuated only by the paper-shuffling sounds of the courtroom. Afterward, Grace was measured but searing about the fact that Caylee's death "will go unavenged." Her description of the girl, in the moments after the verdict, was lurid, emotional and almost novelistic:

But the success of HLN and Grace over the past several months, going wall-to-wall Casey Anthony, is proof that in trial-TV today — much like in prime-time cable news — there is no ratings penalty for taking a side.

Viewers may want information and analysis, but at least a good chunk of them also want to hear their opinions and judgments declaimed passionately, and Grace gives them that with gusto and icy fury. Let the rest of the press cover the American justice system; Grace covers the American vengeance system.

In the aftermath of the verdict, the tenor of HLN's analysis was plain: How did this guilty woman go free? "I cannot give any other explanation," reporter Jane Velez-Mitchell said, "other than human beings are not rational."

It wasn't just HLN, though, that seemed to be operating on the presumption of guilt. Analysts called Anthony a sociopath and a "monster," and even straight-news pundits seemed to have a clear sense of where they thought the trial was going; on ABC, George Stephanopoulos said that "jaws dropped" in the studio at the verdict.

Now, the press is not the legal system. Journalists are bound to be fair, not to presume innocence until proof beyond a reasonable doubt. But at minimum, the general shock over the verdict raises the question of whether the press was discounting weaknesses in the prosecution. And combined with the collapse of the Dominique Strauss-Kahn case — whatever you think about his behavior and character — it shows a press quick to jump to conclusions, if not about actual guilt than at least about guilty verdicts.

And really, will anyone lose readers or viewers in the long run for it? Doubtful. In the short run, even less so. A guilty verdict would have given Grace, HLN and company something to chew over for a day or two. But not guilty? As Grace notes, there is no recourse — and therefore, a grievance, anguish and recriminations that will never end.

After the Tuesday verdict, there were a lot of comparisons to the 1994–95 O.J. Simpson case, but I don't buy them beyond a point. Yes, there was a shocking not-guilty verdict, and yes, there were a lot of people watching. But there were not the larger cultural repercussions about celebrity, privilege and race, or the sense of two Americas seeing the trial, and the world, with different eyes.

Of course, the Casey Anthony trial had its own cultural valences, about motherhood and Anthony's reported lifestyle of partying, among other things. And like the O.J. case, there was talk about the meta-influence of the media circus. Immediately after the verdict, defense lawyer Cheney Mason decried the "media assassination" of his client.

But for TV producers, it will be close enough. There will be arguments, there will be anger — and, despite the jurors' initial refusal to talk, there will certainly be jousting for morning-show and newsmagazine bookings. And Grace sounds like she has outrage enough to last her for months. A couple of hours after the verdict, she responded to a report that the defense team was in a bar having a champagne toast. "You know what? I'm not a preacher," she said, sounding like a preacher:

I'm not a rabbi. But there's something wrong with that. Because Caylee — is dead. And her body decomposed, 15 houses away from where the Anthonys put their head on the pillow every night, every day searching, searching for this little girl. Not evan Paul Ryan in his budget now, in the face of trillions of dollars of deficits currently, had the temerity to step forward and say we have to do Social Security. So yeah, I did some things that were very unpopular, but if you look back on what I did and when I did it, people can say you know what? He may have lost, but he didn't flinch, he stood by what he believed in, and he continued the fight through the end.

STEPHANOPOULOS: But it is admirable to stand by what you believe in, but could it lead to the same result this time around? For example, you just mentioned Congressman Ryan's budget plan. It appears that you want to go even farther than Congressman Ryan. You say you've criticized him for not applying his changes in Medicare, which Democrats say would end Medicare as we know it, for not applying that to those at or near the retirement age. So you'd say to people 55 and older yes, your Medicare will be changed as well?

SANTORUM: Well remember George, almost 25 percent of seniors right now have what the Ryan plan is, it's called Medicare Advantage. And in fact, that number was growing up until Barack Obama slashed the program –

STEPHANOPOULOS: But that's an option –

SANTORUM: – well, but the point is, seniors were able to take money and go out and purchase insurance. And by the way, the seniors who were most likely to do it were lower-income and actually less-educated seniors. Why? Because they found it was a better deal. And so I believe that, seniors – by the way, in the drug program, Medicare Part D, is exactly the Ryan plan. In other words, seniors get resources from the federal government, go out and make choices. No seniors believes they're being thrown off a cliff because they have Medicare Part D. Medicare Part D isn't a government-run, one-size-fits-all drug program, and it's working wonderfully. Seniors love it. "We forced it down their throat," quoting the Democrats. No we didn't, We gave them the choices, and seniors can in fact do this. It does save money, and it's going to be a good thing for them, and it's going to be a great thing for our country.

STEPHANOPOULOS: You've also argued that our enemies don't fear President Obama, but where's the evidence of that? The al Qaeda leadership has been decimated, Osama bin Laden is dead, no significant attack against the United States has been successful. Where is that evidence?

SANTORUM: Well, the evidence is if you look at the countries that we have been appeasing, the Iranians, they are moving full-scale forward with their nuclear program. They know that the president is not going to do anything to stop them, he has been a paper tiger, and they are the existential threat to the state of Israel. And the Israelis know it, and Americans know it, and this president has not stepped forward and has not done anything to stop that threat. That's one, but there are many. Look at what he's doing in Syria, slapping the back of the hand of Assad instead of going after him at least as tough as he went after Mubarak our friend.
